Booze
2.5 parts Bourbon
Mixers
2 parts Water
Garnishes
Mint
Sugar
Directions
Grab a highball glass and place about 10 mint leaves in the bottom then add about a teaspoon and a half of sugar. Next you're going to need to muddle your ingredients. Work the sugar into the mint into the mint leaves break apart, next add a squirt of water to break up the sugary minty goodness. Now fill the glass up with ice, and add the bourbon. Finish the drink off with a bit more water. Enjoy!

bubble I also like to use simple syrup...any way you slice it, I just got my hands on a BUNCH of fresh mint, and the mint julep is now one of my all-time faves. MagicMike09 (35 days ago)
bubble I have also steeped mint in my simple syrup. Then you don't end up with mint on your teeth. But there is something about muddling the mint with the sugar. lounsja (169 days ago)
bubble Oh, dear, too much water. Rather, in Louisiana, and also in NE Alabama, we use a jigger of Bourbon and a drizzle of light syrup (after the sugar and mint are muddled.) plenty of ice. A shaker is a great idea, mix this by hand and you might as well throw it out. NOTE: Powdered sugar is used by some folks, with good results. RevDrDark (691 days ago)

Mint juleps... wow. I remember my grandmother used to make them for all of her guests when I was little. She used to make them for me using tea instead of bourbon... You're supposed to use an actual mint julep cup though, not a highball glass. Mint julep cups are very small and usually made of silver. My grandmother passed her set down to me. You usually don't find them unless you go to a specialty silver store nowadays. Jill Daniels (880 days ago)

Is it appropriate to put newsworthy items about particular drinks in here? Such as this story about a $1000 Mint Julep being sold at the Kentucky Derby. http://tinyurl.com/nh8pj pjfoley (881 days ago)

Pure Southern Satisfaction-- I'm not too sure about the shaker idea, though--I've tried it shaken and just stirred a few times. Shaken Style seems to get too harsh, and even when strained there's still little flakes of mint leaves that will embarrassingly adhere to your front pearlies, in order to humiliate you. pjfoley (906 days ago)

The best way to do a mint julep is with simple syrup (put 2 cups sugar to 1 cup water in sauce pan and heat stirring until melted together) rather than just sugar as it doesn't disolve just right. This advice comes from a Georgian! earthlingzed (917 days ago)
bubble I like it without the water, but that's my filthy gonzo nature. andrewwyld (921 days ago)
bubble Agreed, Alton rocks! And so does this drink. deadhorse (937 days ago)
bubble I ordered one of these once during mardi gras in NO. They gave me a cup full of foul whisky with a mint leaf in the bottom. bleugh. crunchyk9 (939 days ago)
bubble BTW, it might be a good idea to mix this in a shaker with ice and strain it into the crushed ice filled glass. Excellent recipe, tho. Bl@ck(/\)@ter (946 days ago)
