Booze
4 parts Rye whiskey
Mixers
1 part Sweet Vermouth
A splash of Bitters
Garnishes
Cherry
Directions
Manhattans are usually served straight-up in a martini-style glass.

Measure out the rye whiskey and the sweet vermouth into a shaker with some ice. Add a small dash of bitters, if desired. Shake until very cold, and strain into a martini glass. Garnish with a maraschino cherry. Brandied cherries are a bonus.

It is possible to drink these on the rocks, too, but the martini is the preferred style. If rye whiskey is not available, then bourbon can be used as a substitute. The finer the bourbon, the less vermouth is best (for lower shelf bourbon, you may want to move to 3 parts bourbon).

alternate ways to make this drink

bubble Traditionally, like the martini, it was a showcase for the new and exciting foreign vermouth and thus was composed of a commensurately larger portion thereof; ratios were known to go as high as 1:1! So, don't be afraid to make yours 1:3 or 1:2, especially if you're making them correctly, by which I of course mean you aren't leaving out the absolutely VITAL bitters. Delicious with Woodford Reserve. aLateOne (275 days ago)

Current drink of choice but with Makers Mark and stirred with bar spoon and strained instead of shaken. robyoungiii (566 days ago)
bubble Manhattans are a staple of the house, so I streamlined the process by putting a 1/2 ounce measured pour spout on the Vermouth. One pour of vermouth into a graduated glass shaker, fill to 2.5 ounce with rye or bourbon, add a dash of bitters, ice, shake, etc. From 0 to Manhattan quicker than you can say "bourbon or rye?". (Actually, the best part of the measured pourer is no more "too sweet" or "not sweet enough" if you don't accurately measure that measly 1/2 ounce of vermouth.) HopAlong (618 days ago)

i prefer mine with bourbon specifically, and i love having people taste it for the faces they make! the cherry disguises it as something wimpier. poofie (833 days ago)
